Roll labels: What you need to know

by Grace

Self-adhesive labels come in a variety of forms. A roll label can be carried on the backing sheet that goes around a central core. You should note that this core refers to a tube that is made up of cardboard, plastic, paper, or metal. You can use roll labels either for solid blank that you can utilize on printing presses that you can roll feed or have a roll stand, mandrel, and spindle within the device that can load a roll.

You can also use roll labels for pre-printed labels that are usually supplied in a dispenser. They are also commonly utilized in CTM labelling systems and other thermal printers. You can print them using various printing processes or by providing the printing device. People like to use roll labels because they can come in a variety of sizes and shapes. This article discusses roll labels.

Roll labels explained

Roll labels are the high-quality products that come in customizable sizes, materials, and shapes. These labels can be printed utilizing a special printer that usually wraps them around a standard cardboard core.

No doubt, roll labels are useful tools for most businesses regardless of the sector and industry you are in. labeling can come in handy because they give you a chance to relate important information to people. There are many things to label in your business. This includes product labeling, shipping labels, asset labeling, specimen marketing, barcodes, and many more.

The production of a large volume of customized labels may be eased by utilizing a label printer which is cost-effective. Take note that label printers come in various sizes and utilize a common technology called direct thermal or thermal transfer printing. You can find some label printers that are designed for bulk and fast printing while others can do high-definition and detailed prints.

The effectiveness of a label printer tends to depend on the kind of label roll being utilized. Remember that even the best label printers cannot print clearly and accurately, especially if the label roll type being used is of low quality. Therefore, you need to make sure that the supplier of roll labels has the right label roll and printer.

When it comes to label rolls, they are just the materials that a label printer prints on. A label roll comes in specific sizes, and you can measure it in diameter. This is because label printers are designed in various sizes. Therefore, there is often a specifically sized roll label for a particular label printer. Besides, the type of label printers can depend on the label printer’s printing technology and the label’s application.

The selection of the right label roll can depend on the specification of the label printer, size of the label roll, the color of the material, the durability of the roll labels, and your budget. In most cases, roll labels are often made up of plastic or paper mixes. And, other materials can include films, foils, adhesive, and thermal stock.

Types of roll labels

There are several types of roll labels, and they are usually classified based on the printing technology being used, the type of label printer, and the end-use application. There are two major types of roll labels, which are direct thermal labels and thermal transfer labels.

As explained earlier, there is a relationship between label printers and label rolls. A direct thermal label is used with a direct thermal printer, which is a heat-sensitive label. A direct thermal label doesn’t use ribbons, ink, or tonners, making it cost-effective because there is no need to purchase these other items.

Direct thermal labels are suitable for retail and indoor environments that have low moisture and heat levels because they are heat-sensitive. And, because they tend to have short shelf life, direct thermal labels suit short-term prints and are suitable for bulk printing. Therefore, you can use them for coupons, name tags, visitor passes, dispatches, and event tickets.

In short, a direct thermal label is a great option because it’s cost-effective, saves time to produce them, are good for bulk printing, are available in various sizes, and you don’t need ink, ribbons, and many more.

On the other hand, a thermal transfer label lasts longer than a direct thermal label and is more durable. You should note that you can use thermal transfer labels with thermal transfer printers. Keep in mind that unlike a direct thermal label, a thermal transfer label uses ink or ribbon. Because they use ink or ribbons, you can do high-resolution printing with multiple colors quickly.

A thermal transfer label is not heat-sensitive, making it suitable for harsh conditions in outdoor environments and high temperatures. The durability of a thermal transfer label depends on the label rolls and compatibility of ribbons. A strong compatibility can remove the option of putting protective laminates.

And, because they can be suitable for an outdoor environment and how long they can last, they are often used for product identification, barcode printing, outdoor labeling, and lab specimens. Therefore, you need to consider using a thermal transfer label because it has durable prints, it’s clear with high resolution, it’s durable and can withstand extreme temperatures, and it’s suitable for colored printing.

There are several scenarios where a roll label format may be ideal. If you have a lot of products that you want to label, then it’s a good idea to use roll labels. This is because the labeling machines can make the labeling process faster than doing it by hand.

Storing roll labels is also convenient because the labels are already rolled around the tube. Therefore, there is no risk of folds or tears since each label rests properly in the ribbon until you unfold it for application. This helps to save space in your business premises, making it suitable for small work areas.

Roll labels are regarded as standard for a labeling machine. Regardless of whether or not you intend to apply a label by hand, it makes sense to have the roll format. This type of backing often makes peeling the labels easier, and the roll can keep in place individual labels when applying them to the products.
